It was just the first part of March when we announced that Canadians owning a Samsung Galaxy S5 were starting to receive the long awaited Android Lollipop 5.0 upgrade. Bell users were the first to receive the notification, but we were sure that the other carriers would soon follow…which they did. Enhancements were to include “Android 5.0 Lollipop OS upgrade (A new user interface design, improved notifications and more),” and “Various improvements.”
A lot has happened this past weekend with the Samsung Galaxy S5 Lollipop upgrade in Canada. It was released, then it seemed like things had come to a screeching halt according to our source, due to issues some users were experiencing. TokesNoMo on Reddit posted about the original problems he was having with his Galaxy S5 Lollipop update on his Rogers based Galaxy S5 and said: “Galaxy S5 user here, I am located in Canada and carrier locked to Rogers. It would appear that either Samsung or Rogers had halted further push of the Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade for the Samsung Galaxy S5 due to some minor bugs and issues.” He was able to upgrade about 2 weeks ago using the OTA method and although it appeared that everything went well, he ended up with the now infamous ‘endless reboot loop’ He said he narrowed it down to a data issue with one of his apps – the phone would not reboot in ‘airplane mode.’
Rogers responded on Reddit that, “There were issues with the update so it has been removed from the FOTA server. Samsung is working on a fix as we speak, but we don’t have any additional details as to when it will be re-released.”
However, it was just announced that Samsung has fixed the issues in a new build, dated March 10 and has started to roll out the OTA Lollipop update once again. It is never a good thing when an update presents the users with an issue, but it looks like Samsung jumped right on it and things are rolling smooth once again. The problems fixed included screen freezes, force closures and rapid battery draining. The new version of the update includes the bug fixes for these problems so Canadian Galaxy S5 users who install it on their phones should not be affected. The new release firmware details the version as Android 5.0, Changelist 4100894, Build Date as Tuesday, March 10, PDA as G900W8VLU1BOC1 and the CSC as G900 W8OYA1BOC1.
