Samsung Reportedly Has Record Pre-Orders For The Galaxy S6 And Galaxy S6 Edge

Samsung is counting on their new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge to raise them back into the stratosphere of the smartphone world and if early pre-order figures are true, then Samsung should be very happy at this point.  According to a top executive(wishing to remain anonymous)who told The Korea Times last week at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) expo in Barcelona, “Samsung received some 20 million pre-orders for the S6 and S6 Edge – 15 million of S6 and five million of the S6 Edge from mobile carriers, worldwide.  This is the record.”  There seems to be nothing but positive things being said about the new Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, according to the source. Samsung Electronics mobile chief Shin Jong-kyun believes that the Galaxy S6 sales would outpace the sales of last years’ Galaxy S5 and added, “To be honest, pre-orders of the two Galaxy variants from our major clients are really huge.”  The new device will be released worldwide at the same time – the Netherlands was the first country to take orders with pricing of 700 euros ($US760) for the 32GB base Galaxy S6 and 850 euros ($US920) for the Galaxy S6 Edge.

Samsung will undoubtedly launch an aggressive ad campaign upon release, complete with promotions.  They will work with the carriers as well offering incentives and benefits – most likely to coincide with the launch of Apple’s new iPhone later this year.  Mark C. Newman, at Bernstein Research in Hong Kong, even believes that the new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge could beat expectations.  In a report he said, “We think the components side of the S6 is more positive for Samsung’s earnings direction, with the processor moving internally (saving potentially $28 a phone), significantly more memory (DRAM and particularly NAND) and the display showing off their technology lead in flexible OLED.”

It’s not unusual for a new smartphone to start off strong, but it will be important to see if those sales numbers can sustain themselves.  Samsung’s aggressive ad campaign and incentive offerings will carry them only so far.  Having a great product will certainly help keep sales brisk, but the other main factor will be pricing – will the public feel the pricing is fair for what they are getting.  Samsung may have a great device, but that does not mean that they can price it through the roof and expect customers to flock to make Samsung rich.
