Google’s Nexus 6 is a beast of a phone that supports nearly every carrier out there using every kind of wireless technology available. Even Verizon’s CDMA and LTE networks were able to be used out of the box, which is a feat for any phone that also supports all the other GSM networks out there. What’s particularly interesting about the Nexus 6 is that Google is trying a new way of getting carrier-exclusive apps and features on your phone via background updates when you have a branded SIM installed. For instance if you have T-Mobile you’ll automatically get the T-Mobile My Account app installed on your phone without having to do anything.
With that being said the various models sold by carriers also receive slightly different updates, some of which are tailored to specific features of that network. The recent Android 5.1 Lollipop update for T-Mobile’s Nexus 6 included brand new radio software that enables LTE Band 12 700MHZ support as well as turning on the switch for Voice over LTE in areas that support it. This not only ramps up the LTE availability in markets where the 700MHZ spectrum is available, but also brings better voice quality with HD Voice via VoLTE. But what about areas where there’s little coverage or no coverage at all? T-Mobile still has a sizable 2G EDGE-only network around the country and while that’s improving every day it’s still a problem for people in those areas.
Wi-Fi Calling was a feature launched a few years ago on T-Mobile on all carrier-branded Android phones but has been unavailable on any other phone that’s not T-Mobile branded. The Nexus 6 was set to change all of that by being the first Nexus device with Wi-Fi Calling, but the Q1 2015 timeline we were given has already passed. Thankfully it seems like T-Mobile is still working on this and thanks to Des, the always helpful T-Mobile product specialist who likes to Tweet updates for customers. This latest Tweet shows T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling working on a Nexus 6, and Des confirms that it’s still under development. While no specific release window was mentioned the update must be getting ready soon if T-Mobile is feeling confident enough to Tweet it out.
