Xiaomi has teased the announcement of a new device a couple of days ago by posting a matchbox on their official Weibo account. Well, this China-based smartphone manufacturer has just announced what we thought they will announce, the GoPro camera competitor, the Xiaomi Yi Action camera. This thing has been made in collaboration with the company which created the Xiaomi Yi home camera. The Yi Action camera will be able to connect to Xiaomi devices via a separate app. What do you get here? Well, Xiaomi has included the 16-megapixel Sony Exmor R sensor on the inside which can record video in 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution at 60fps.
This action cam weighs 72 grams and it’s waterproof, you can take it up to 40 meters below water and it will work just fine. It seems like it doesn’t even need a case for that, though that’s still not confirmed, but Xiaomi didn’t announce a case you’re required to put it in if you want to go below water. The company is offering two deals for this camera, for 399 Yuan ($64) you get the camera only, and for 499 Yuan ($80) you get a selfie rod along with the camera itself. Xiaomi almost certainly won’t release this internationally, like its other products, so if you don’t live in Asia you’ll hardly be able to get this straight from the company.
There you have it folks, this is the new GoPro camera competitor for the Chinese market. This thing is extremely affordable, as most Xiaomi products are as the matter a fact. Unfortunately it’s not available worldwide, but I’m sure you’ll find a way to purchase one if you’re interested, several retailers will quite probably manage to get their hands on the Yi Action camera soon. The design of this thing is nothing flashy, but it’ll do the trick for sure.
