I think the title says it all. But I’m really excited for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. The two devices became available last Friday all around the world. I got my hands on both models, as you can probably tell from the extra Galaxy S6 content on the site this week. And I must say, I am impressed. The last Samsung smartphone I used, and really, really liked was the Galaxy S2. To be specific it was the Samsung Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch on Sprint. So glad we got back to just Galaxy S3, S4, S5, etc., after that round.
I haven’t been a huge fan of Samsung’s devices because they all felt the same, and felt dated. I also wasn’t a fan of their software, Touchwiz. After last year’s Galaxy S5 launch, Samsung really took a step back and looked at what they’re doing. Samsung has paired down the amount of smartphones they released, here in 2015. In fact they’ve only launched about 4 smartphones so far this year. The Galaxy A5, A7, S6 and S6 Edge. But have also paired back their software. It’s much more speedy now, and a bit less bloated. In fact, Samsung took out about 40% of their features that they found most people weren’t using. However, it does still have a ton of apps pre-installed. That’s likely due to the carriers, especially for us in the US.
But have you actually looked at the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge? It’s definitely hot. I got hands on with them at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month and fell in love with the emerald green model that they have on display – that won’t be coming to North America anytime soon. I love how the phone looks, how it feels, everything. It’s safe to say that Samsung has my attention this year. The glass back, metal sides, and paired down Touchwiz, all a recipe for success. It’s nice to see that Samsung actually listened to their customers this year. Sure they got rid of the microSD card slot and the removable battery, but if you are someone that’s complaining about those features being axed. Take a minute and think, when was the last time you switched batteries? When was the last time you used all 32GB of storage? Or 64GB of Storage? It’s not the end of the world really.
I know what you’re thinking “but you loved the Galaxy Note line”. I do love the Galaxy Note, and really thought about buying the Galaxy Note 3 as my daily driver. But those phones are just too big for me. I know, I know, I’m probably the only one. But now that we have a really premium build in the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, it might be time to jump on the Samsung bandwagon. Unlike other smartphone manufacturers that were on top and never really changed (we’re talking about you Nokia and BlackBerry), Samsung has changed and adapted to the times. Which is great to see.
