In the age of smarter, more connected homes, home monitoring systems comprised of security cameras and companion apps that link to your smartphone so you can keep tabs on things remotely are becoming more of a big thing. Most consumers may be more familiar with options like Dropcam, Foscam and options from Movo, however, Flir has just announced an offering for home security called the Flir FX which also comes with a companion app for users to link into. Although home monitoring is an obvious use case for something like the Flir FX, it can also be used for security and monitoring around the office, and it can also be used as a dashcam or for recording sports, making it a versatile little piece of equipment.
The Flir FX companion app offers up loads of options and control, as users can set the camera up to designate a specific area to monitor, and users can sift through hours of recorded video using what Flir is calling the “rapid recap” feature. The app also lets users become notified whenever motion or any kind of activity is detected by the Flir FX and the camera automatically begins the recording process whenever motion or audio is sensed.
The Flir FX is WiFi enabled which allows it to stay connected to your home or office network, and it supports 1080p recording quality which ends up stored on a microSD card within the camera unit. There are multiple options for operational recording time depending on whether you choose to keep it plugged into a power source or not, which makes the camera a little more limiting if you’re planning on having it record continuously. The Flir FX records for up to two hours at the 1080p quality resolution but it can be plugged into micro USB adapter (optional accessory) that allows it to continue recording without a time limit, or it can be attached to an included stand which doubles the recording time from two hours to four hours. Users with devices running Android 40 and up will be compatible with the Flir FX, which is available through multiple retailers including Amazon and can be picked up for $199.99 which a release date set for April 15th.
