It is no secret that Google is fond of web browsers. After all, it is web based material that makes up the primary source of its business. Google Search is very much a web offering, and one which Google are happy to promote on both desktops and mobiles. Not to mention, the company’s Chromebooks are all purely browser-dependent based products, requiring the user to pretty much do everything and anything in a browser. As such, Google does have some bias when it comes to browser-based content. Well, it seems Google has launched a new tool this week, designed to offer both users and developers some insight into what is available in browser form.
Whether accessing browser content by desktop or mobile, Google had decided to highlight some sites and web apps that they are fond of. The new feature, dubbed ‘Spotlights’, is exactly that. A spotlight shone on a number of sites and web apps. Chances are, that the current offerings under the spotlight, are ones you might not have heard of. That is because Google are not picking the options of Spotlight based on their mainstream success. At present, there are four sites/web apps being spotlighted and these include HN Premii, which is an optimized reader for hacker news. There is also the very cutely named Merry Pixmas, along with 0h h1 and SVGOMG.
The real interesting thing about the spotlights feature is that it does not only highlight the web sites and apps that you might not have heard of. As well as providing the links to this apps/sites, Google also provides a decent amount of information on them. For instance, each listing includes a section on why Google likes the chosen site/app as well as a section offering what they feel could be improved about the site/app. Likewise, each spotlight listing also includes a brief (but detailed) Q&A with the developer. Offering insight on why they decided to focus on web-based content compared to other platforms.
