The #bendgate controversy was thought to have ended awhile back, after all the reports on the iPhone 6 bending had subsided. However, it seems in the last few days the hashtag has returned with a vengeance. this is due to the fact that a few days back a video was posted on YouTube showing Samsung’s latest flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge being put through its own bend test and reportedly bending at similar pressures to the iPhone 6. Since then, the bendgate tag has been back in full swing on social media.
In fact, so much so that Samsung this morning decided to refute the claims of the video and claiming that it wrongly judged their device. The rebuttal came with two clear comments being made by Samsung. The first is that the level of pressure noted in the video causing the bending (110 lbf) was significantly higher than what would be encountered under ‘normal circumstances’. The second point Samsung raised was that the video did not note the pressure levels of the back of the device, which is just as significant when comparing to other devices as the front. As a result, Samsung were officially requesting the test be reconducted to provide a clearer test and the results released to the public.
Well, it seems the other South Korean tech company, LG, could not avoid using the opportunity of making a small and subtle comment on the whole Galaxy S6 Edge bending situation. LG Jordan (the Jordan-based arm of LG) has today sent out a tweet of the image shown above, highlighting how their LG G Flex 2 smartphone comes with a more natural curve and intentional bending appeal. In fact, the tweet came with the attached message “Some curves just make sense“. And if you were still unsure of whether this was aimed at Samsung, the tweet also came with the now infamous #bendgate attached. Not to mention, the image also includes (and highlights) the word “edge” in its narrative. Of course, whether the test will be repeated or whether any difference in the results will change the momentum that is building remains to be seen. Either way, bendgate is definitely back.
