It’s been some time now since we saw Sony release a flagship smartphone, with the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact being the last to have launched last Fall. This isn’t usually the case for Sony as they release smartphones on a six-month cycle when talking about the Xperia Z line, and last year’s Mobile World Congress saw the release of both the Xperia Z2 and the Xperia Z2 Tablet, but this year we saw just the release of the Xperia Z4 Tablet. We recently heard that Sony could be planning an Xperia Z4 with a metal build, a squarish design and even a fingerprint scanner. Now, thanks to a massive leak of internal documents, we’ve got a closer look at some early concept renders of the next Xperia Z flagship.
Yesterday, WikiLeaks took it upon themselves to host a massive database with 30,287 items spanning pictures, spreadsheets, emails and more from a Sony hack. This massive leak of emails and documents has been pored over by relative newcomer @xperialeak and new concept renders of the device have surfaced. These clearly look like early concept renders for the next Xperia Z device, but they easily show us where Sony are headed. A seamless, sleek design is teased complete with a metal build throughout the device. Since then, the Esato forum has got involved as well, and there are many images to take a look at.
So far, we’ve heard quite a bit about the internals of the Xperia Z4, that it will carry a Snapdragon 810, 3GB of RAM and be available in both Quad HD and Full HD versions. Outside of the fingerprint scanner however, we haven’t heard much that would make the Xperia Z4 more than just another refresh. Of course, we could be looking at a total design refresh if these renders are any indication. Add all of this to the idea that the leaks so far could have been of the Xperia Z3 Neo and not of the Xperia Z4 and the plot thickens. Are we looking at a total redesign from Sony where the Xperia Z is concerned? Well, it would certainly seem about time, but as always we’ll have to wait and see when Sony is ready to officially announce their latest flagship.
