There are quite a few Android Wear-powered smartwatches out in the market at the moment, and Motorola’s Moto 360 (pictured above) offering is still considered one of the most elegant ones out there. This circular smartwatch has been out in the market for quite some time now, and Motorola is definitely working on its successor. There are some quirks that Motorola needs to resolve in the Moto 360’s successor, that smartwatch was really good, but not perfect.
That being said, Phandroid received a tip from an unnamed source regarding the second-gen Moto 360 smartwatch. The source does mention that the tipster is a very popular Android developer, which doesn’t exactly clear things up. Anyhow, according to the info provided by the tipster, his Android developer console got pinged by a mysterious Motorola wearable codenamed “Smelt”. These pings came from Mundelein, a city near Chicago, where Motorola Mobility’s headquarters resides. According to the provided info, this device is running an Android 5.1 build, and the listed processor is “armeabi-v7a”, which is only a codename or something similar. The display resolution of this wearable was also unveiled, we’re looking at a 360 x 360 resolution display.
By the looks of things, “Smelt” could be the second-gen Moto 360 smartwatch. Motorola has a habit of referencing fish when codenaming their devices, and smelt is a species of fish. We don’t have a lot of info regarding Motorola’s upcoming smartwatch, but an interesting leak came our way back in March. As you all know by now, Lenovo now owns Motorola Mobility. That being said, Lenovo’s CEO Yang Yuanqing posted an interesting picture on his official Weibo (Chinese social network) account, possibly showcasing the upcoming smartwatch in the flesh. Motorola Moto 360 is still one of the best looking smartwatches out in the market, but Motorola can still make some improvements here. The company is expected to get rid of the “flat tire” which cuts of the display at the bottom, and also choose a more modern processor this time around. Either way, the company is expected to announce this smartwatch in the coming weeks, stay tuned.
