While Android 5.0 Lollipop has been one of the most anticipated updates the operating system has ever received because of the visual overhaul it represented, it also has been one of the most controversial ones. Google released the update in November 2014, supposedly focusing on reducing the time it takes to get it on most devices. There have been some bugs that Google needed to solve so that OEMs could make the needed customizations before updating their own devices, which has taken some time and thus delayed the process.
Samsung was actually one of the first OEMs to update their devices, particularly their flagship smartphones and now they seem to be focusing on their flagship tablets as well. The tablets in the Samsung Galaxy Tab S series have been very well received due to the high-resolution S-AMOLED screens and the high-end specs they integrate. The Wi-Fi and LTE versions of the 10-inch Galaxy Tab S have already been updated last month and now, the owners of the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 can rejoice as they will be receiving the update shortly, at least the Wi-Fi version of it. The update is based on Android 5.0.2 which is the one that has been out there for a while now and changes in this version include an updated UX with colors and other elements based on Material Design and some performance improvements. Unfortunately, some bugs have been reported in that Android version, so hopefully Samsung will hurry to update their devices to the more stable Android 5.1 version of Lollipop.
The update can be received over the air or through the software Samsung Kies by connecting the tablet to a PC. It is important to notice that the update will not be received by all the tablets at the same time, even if they belong to the same model number. It has been reported that the first country to get the update will be South Korea and should be rolling out soon to other regions. There’s still no information on when will the LTE version of the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 will receive the update, but it will probably happen in a near future.
