Android Hits 26% Enterprise Share But Still Behind iOS

The enterprise market is a vast opportunity for growth for the world’s mobile OS platforms, one that Apple and iOS still hold by a huge margin, although it is one that Google hopes to change. In a recent report from Good Technology on Mobility Index, it states that while iOS had lost 1% in market share to Google’s Android which had now raised from 25% to 26%, they still hold a substantial lead with a total of 72% adoption rate by the enterprise sector for the first quarter of 2015. These numbers are based on total activations for the quarter and not total number of devices being used currently. With further advancement of the Android for Work program, perhaps Google can shift the tides and prove themselves a worthy platform for a larger portion of adoption by companies in future quarters.

Of the 26% of Android devices activated in the first quarter of 2015 by companies and enterprise outfits, Samsung was perhaps unsurprisingly the most activated OEM with their products, and along with iOS devices, Apple and Samsung devices made up a total of 28 out of the 30 top activated handsets. Of those that were Android, Samsung’s Galaxy S5 smartphone was the most activated enterprise device for the platform. In addition to Android gaining 1% of the smartphone market share for the enterprise sector in Q1 of 2015, they also gained 1% of the market share for tablet adoption, although Android still falls short behind Apple and iOS who holds the majority of tablet activations in Q1 at a total of 81%.

Where Android has seen the most growth for enterprise adoption is in the high-tech industry, as it’s been reported to hold 47% of all activations in this particular sector from the first quarter of 2015 and is the second quarter in a row where Android remains the dominant platform for mobile device activation. Android also saw plenty of popularity in the energy industry, where it made up 44% of all mobile devices activated in Q1 of 2015. This is a significant increase over Q4 of 2014 where the Android platform only made up one-third of all activated mobile devices in this same space. What this displays is that although Android is only seeing minor increases in enterprise adoption for the mobile device platform of choice for activation, it is seeing an increase in interest from companies and is showing promise as a formidable mobile device platform.
