There have been a number of high-profile smartphone unveilings over the past few months. While, most of them have been long expected and rumored they have still seemed to surprise the general public. Samsung did this with the launch of the Galaxy S6 Edge and the Edge’s almost mythical allure while HTC did this with the One M9. Although, to be fair, in HTC’s case, the surprising was more thanks to what was considered a general lack of surprises with the device. Well, when it comes to surprise unveilings, it looks like Sony have topped all the manufacturers this year with the launch of their latest Xperia device, the Sony Xperia Z4 if you are in Japan or the Sony Xperia Z3+ if you are anywhere else.
To recap, the Sony Xperia Z4 seemed to silently launch last month in Japan as a Japan exclusive. Then today, Sony unveiled the Xperia Z4 for the non-Japan markets as the Sony Xperia Z3+. For those that missed this morning’s announcement, the Xperia Z3+ will come with a 5.2-inch display with a 1920 x 1080 resolution. Inside, the Xperia Z3+ is equipped with 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage (additional microSD card slot) and powered by the 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor. In terms of cameras, the Xperia Z3+ comes equipped with a 20.7-megapixel rear camera coupled with a 5-megapixel front facing option. The Xperia Z3+ is also IPX5/IPX8 certified for water and dust resistance, features a 2,930 mAh battery and comes running on Android 5.0 (Lollipop).
At the time, there was no mention from Sony as to how much the Xperia Z3+ will cost outside of Japan, although it was announced that it will be available starting next month. Well, UK retailer Clove, has already opened up pre-orders for the device and the price Clove are asking for is £549. Which works out to be roughly $845 on a direct currency conversion. This price is for the SIM-free version and the device is available in black, copper and white colors.
