Every single one of you reading this probably has a car charger, don’t you? Whether it be built into the car, or one you bought from Amazon for about $5. What if we told you that Qualcomm and Daimler were working a solution for wireless in-car charging? Both companies are looking at ways to charge your phone wirelessly while in the car, but more than that, they are both looking at it for cars as well. How cool would it be to charge your electric car wirelessly? Talk about geeking out.
“It’s important that we remain on the cutting edge of technology and continue to deliver unparalleled experiences to our customers. With this in mind, we are eager to jointly explore possible fields of future cooperation with an internationally leading tech firm like Qualcomm.” Said Daimler’s executive Thomas Weber.
Currently it’s unclear how this would work. Whether your phone could be anywhere in the car and get charged, or if it needs to be on a mat or something. I’m sure we’ll learn more in the near future, but it definitely has us excited. We reviewed TYLT’s Qi Wireless car dock earlier this year, and it was a pretty nice car dock, but the fact that you need it to be plugged into the car made it a bit cumbersome. Although we understood why it needed to be plugged in, so that it can charge your device.
Qualcomm has said for quite a while that they were looking at getting into the automotive scene. Whether it was by building processors, or working with automakers on new technology, we weren’t sure. But it appears they are working with Daimler, who used to own Chrysler (Fiat now owns Chrysler), for wireless charging. It’s going to be interesting to see where this partnership takes them. As Qualcomm has had a bit of trouble lately with the Snapdragon 810 processor, so hopefully this can help turn the company around. It’ll be interesting to see if they fire up any other partnerships with car makers. Seeing as technology in cars is always way behind the rest of the world, Qualcomm could really help out everyone.
