It feels like just yesterday when we were wondering when Google would finally get around to getting their latest tablet, the Nexus 9, updated to the latest version of Android. In fact it was only 12 hours ago that we saw a website dedicated to telling customers when the super-powered tablet would finally get updated to Android 5.1, but alas it seems that today is not that day. Google’s Nexus 9 hasn’t been updated since the second day of December when the Android 5.0.1 Lollipop update came across the wire, and today it looks like Google is finally dropping the long-awaited Android 5.0.2 update for its customers.
Unfortunately this isn’t the update we were hoping for or even a fairly recent update for that matter. Android 5.0.2 Lollipop was released for the nearly three-year old Nexus 7 2012 tablet on December 19th and was never released for the Nexus 5 or 6 at all. The irony in this is that the Samsung Galaxy S6 just started receiving Android 5.0.2 Lollipop as well, meaning the Nexus 9 is behind Samsung’s latest and greatest. At this point we’re looking at all Nexus devices being on Android 5.1 except for the Nexus 9, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t on the way.
Those looking for the update should see an over-the-air notification any time now, but if you’d rather download the factory image manually and do it yourself you can find it at the link below. Factory images are also useful for giving your tablet or phone a fresh coat of paint by factory resetting it to the state it came out of the box with, except with the latest version of the operating system available for the tablet of course. Posting the update likely means that Google has gotten over any hurdles it needed to pass to keep the Nexus 9 updated, a worry that many owners had given that it’s taken over 5 months to receive any sort of new update. While we’re still waiting to hear just how long it’s going to take for Android 5.1 to hit Google’s latest tablet it’s likely that update is now one step closer to being delivered.
