We’ve been talking about the Indian smartphone market quite frequently lately. That is the second biggest smartphone market in the world, and it’s growth-rate is quite staggering. Analysts say that the Indian smartphone market is where the Chinese market was a couple of days ago, which means that its development is off the charts. A lot of smartphone manufacturing companies have entered the Indian smartphone market this year, and a lot more are coming.
That being said, India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has announced the ‘Make in India’ initiative back in September last year. This is basically a plan to get foreign manufacturers to produce their hardware in India, and thus provide jobs for people in India. As part of this inititative, India is providing all sorts of benefits for manufacturers, and it seems like it was successful thus far. A number of OEMs have already announced that they’ll open up assembly plans in India: Xiaomi, Foxconn, Oppo, etc. Well, it seems another OEM is going to join the evergrowing list.
According to a report from Tech Radar, Motorola is going to join the ‘Make in India’ train as well. Motorola has recently confirmed that they’re thinking about opening a manufacturing facility in India. The Lenovo-owned company actually already owns a factory in Chennai, India, but it’s not functional at the moment. The company used to assemble and package products there before, but haven’t been doing that for quite some time now. It seems like Motorola intends to start it up again.
Motorola is actually selling their devices in India already through the country’s biggest retailer, Flipkart, but they’re importing them from China. It would make the process far easier if Motorola were to manufacture them in India, of course. Motorola has actually managed to sell over 3 million units of Moto E, Moto G and Moto X in India between February and December last year, and it seems like that’s more than enough for them to open up a manufacturing plant in India.
