Years ago BlackBerry was one of the most respected companies in the mobile space. Their devices were a synonym for quality and were widely used by business consumers. This Canada-based company has lost its way though and has waited far too long in order to bring improvements to their operating system and smartphone line, which resulted in BlackBerry’s downfall. The company has tried to revive its presence by releasing the BlackBerry 10 OS and a couple of new devices, but it was too little too late for the company.
That being said, they even tried hiring John Chen as CEO last year, in order to bring back the old glory. Mr. Chen managed to slow down company’s downfall to some extent, but BlackBerry is still not where it should be, not by a long shot. A lot of companies were mentioned to be interested in purchasing BlackBerry in the last couple of years, and at one point it even seemed quite possible that will happen, but it didn’t. Well, it seems like we’re at it again, read on.
According to industry insiders, company’s profits have actually exceeded estimates in the first quarter of 2015, and a number of companies are now interested in purchasing BlackBerry. According to the source, Xiaomi, Microsoft, Huawei and Lenovo are all interested in acquiring Blackberry. DigiTimes’ sources say that Microsoft has even commissioned investment companies to evaluate the possibility of acquiring BlackBerry. The Chinese smartphone manufacturers, however, see an opportunity to improve their presence in the business sector, both in the US and Europe. Both Microsoft and these Chinese OEMs are also looking to expand their patent portfolio, of course. As you probably know, BlackBerry might not be what they used to, but they own a lot of patents.
There you have it, a number of companies seem to be interested in purchasing BlackBerry, and Microsoft, Xiaomi and Lenovo were mentioned last year as well. By the looks of it, Microsoft has an advantage here due to the regulatory agencies in the US and Europe. Either way, we’ll let you know if any additional news surface, stay tuned.
