If you’re still waiting for the update to Android Wear 5.1.1, worry not as it should be reaching your device soon seeing as it’s already been rolling out for the better part of a week. While the features coming along with this most recent update are great, (features like gesture support for cycling through notification cards, WiFi support for use of the watches without a Bluetooth connection to a smartphone, and of course emojis) there is a new rumor now floating around that Android Wear may gain some new voice related functionality in a future update. More specifically, support for speakers and on-watch calls from the wrist.

Suffice it to say that if the Android Wear team is indeed working on these features, they likely won’t be coming to any of the already existing devices as none of them currently have speakers. With this being the case, Android Wear smartwatches which carry speakers might not be too far off, and that could allow users to gain a wide range of things from notifications with sound coming in whenever a card hits the watch and potentially even music playback from the wrist. When and if these devices hit the market could be in the near future or it could be months away, but chances are Google is prepared to discuss these details at Google I/O next week.

In addition to the support for the hardware with embedded speakers, it’s also said that Android Wear could be gaining the ability for on-watch calling, which would make it all the more simple for users to engage in conversation from their wrist. Once again, this would be provided that a device has the speakers to allow on-watch calling to work which at the moment none of the watches do. It may also suggest that Android Wear could be getting a device which is capable of stand-alone connectivity through a cell network much like Samsung’s Gear S running on Tizen. Whether or not these rumors end up a reality or not still remains to be seen, but if they are on the horizon they can’t be too far off from an official announcement.
