Xiaomi Expects Cloud Storage Demand To Grow 600% Annually

Xiaomi is currently the number one smartphone manufacturer in China, and one of the fastest growing smartphone OEMs in the world. This company is only 5 years old, and yet, that didn’t stop them from penetrating the Chinese smartphone market and climbing to the very top of it. Xiaomi has a huge appetite for success and is spreading all over Asia, not to mention that they started selling their accessories in other markets as well. This China-based OEM is expected to start selling their smartphones in Latin America soon, and it remains to be seen what happens after that.

That being said, Xiaomi’s Chairman, Lei Jun, has attended the Global Big Data Era Guiyang Summit 2015 in Guiyang, and shared some info with the world. The company’s chairman said that Xiaomi expects its revenues from cloud storage services to hike by 4-5 fold in 2015. Xiaomi has invested $1 billion in order to develop cloud storage services and meet Big Data demand from users. The company has partnered up with Kingsoft, a China-based software developer and began providing services last year.

The company’s founder also decided to share some sales number with the world. Xiaomi is primarily a smartphone manufacturer, but they sell all kinds of smart gadgets, including smartbands, smart TVs, air purifiers, etc. The company actually sells over 1 million smartbands and over 100,000 sport cameras a month. Their sales are going so well, that the company actually managed to sell over 100,000 air purifiers a month as well.

More than 97 million users use Xiaomi’s cloud storage services. There are 40.5 billion photos and 504 million videos stored on there according to Lei Jun. Xiaomi estimates that the storage demand will grow 600% on an annual basis. The company’s founder has also added that the main problem of the industry will be the development of commercial models and how to mine value of data.

This Chinese company has managed to sell 61 million smartphones in 2014 alone, and is aiming to sell 80-100 million handsets by the end of 2015. Considering the amount of devices they push out to the market, and the company’s sales number, they might even achieve that by the end of the year. We’ll see, stay tuned for more info, as always.
