Xiaomi, the world’s 3rd largest smartphone distributor which recently used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 System-on-chips in their latest Note series devices is rumored to be switching towards the Taiwanese SoCs provider MediaTek. Xiaomi Note shows no signs of overheating, as it was thought to be because of the SoC used by Xiaomi. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 tends to overheat, which is why it was ditched by Samsung and LG. Samsung used their home brewed Exynos for their latest flagships, whereas LG used Snapdragon 808 instead of 810.
Xiaomi used MediaTek’s chipsets for its mid-range smartphones including the Redmi Series. But now with MediaTek’s new Helio X20 system-on-chip and Qualcomm’s overheating issues, Xiaomi might consider using MediaTek’s Deca-Core Chipset for its next generation flagships. We already reported that MediaTek may attract orders from Xiaomi and LG, and now according to the sources this is eminent. Ever since the announcement of their 10-Core chipset MediaTek’s sales department has been very active getting smartphone manufacturers to use their chipsets instead of its competitor Qualcomm. MediaTek has also officially stated its ongoing cooperation with Xiaomi officials to improve its position globally in the high-end smartphone segment.
MediaTek recently announced its 10-core Helio X20 series SoC will be available for sampling in the third quarter of 2015. MediaTek has confirmed there 10-core CPU Helio X20 and this will notch their game up to more smartphone vendors buying their chip instead of Qualcomm. It is quite evident with the power of Helio X20 that it is going to be used in flagships, and MediaTek will come out of the phase where it was powering only the Mid-Ranged smartphones. The Helio X20 features 2 high power A72 cores clocked at 2.5 GHz and 4 mid-power A53 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz. It also has 4 low-power cores clocked at 1.4 GHz. The chip is featuring 10 processing cores in a Tri-Cluster architecture. The A72 cores will boost raw performance while the A53 ones will be more power-efficient. The chip was already rumored to be powerful enough to break 70,000 on AnTuTu. The Helio X20 will reportedly be built on TSMC’s (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) 20nm process and will come with a Cat. 6 LTE-A radio. The Helio X20 will have ARM’s Mali T880 GPU.
