A Beer Fridge from Molson Unlocks with Voice Translation

We all like a nice cold beer right? Especially on a hot summer day. Molson, who is a popular brewery in Canada, has worked with Google to create a new Beer Fridge. But what’s so special about it? The fact that you can unlock it with voice translation. So it’s not just using your voice, but you have to say the phrase in a few different languages first before it’ll unlock. Being that this Fridge is in Canada, of  course, you need to say “I am Canadian” but in different languages. You can watch the video down below and see how it worked out for a group of people.

The fridge will only open once it recognizes the signature phrase in six different languages. So you can’t just say that phrase in english. Even though a big part of Canada speaks French, you still need four more languages, before the fridge will open and offer you lots of beer to drink. Which was what everyone wanted, obviously.

Obviously the key ingredient here – other than Molson’s beer – is Google’s Speech Recognition API, as well as their Google Translate service. Google’s API allowed the fridge to not only recognize that someone was talking to it, but also recognize the language. As you’ll see in the video, it recognized a few different languages. You’ll see that English, Mandarin and Italian were some of the languages that were recognized. But going further than just recognizing the speech, it had to recognize that phrase, “I am Canadian” and translate it from those languages to make sure it was the right phrase.

Pretty cool stuff here from Google and Molson here. This is all part of Canada’s symbolic birthday which is on July 1st. Where brands like to do what they can to capitalize on the birthday, even though that doesn’t happen just in Canada. We’ve seen plenty of brands elsewhere around the world look to capitalize on different holidays before. Perhaps that’s why Tim Horton’s released their EHmoji keyboard this past week, so that users could “speak like Canadians”, unfortunately it’s only available for iPhone right now.
