Chinese networking and telecommunications equipment manufacturer Huawei is giving an opportunity to its Honor Club members to be part of the beta test program for its Android 5.1 Lollipop update of the Huawei Honor 6, according to latest reports. Reports coming in earlier on Friday from users in Italy and Spain had suggested, the company had already started rolling out the Android 5.1 Lollipop public beta for its Ascend P7 handset, which came with Android 4.4.2 KitKat out of the box. A while back, Huawei had spoken about updating more of its devices to Lollipop, and in one fell swoop, looks like the company is making good on its promise to roll out the update to two of its devices launched last year.
The company will choose only 100 registered customers based out of the UK, France and Germany, to roll out the beta Android 5.1 ROM, and users applying for the ‘honor’ will have to send an email to the company with the phone’s IMEI number and explain why they’d like to partake in the beta test program, before they can become bona fide beta testers for the company. Once chosen by Huawei, the users will get the opportunity to install the beta ROM on their device. The company overlays Android with its custom proprietary interface, named Emotion UI (EMUI), and the Android 5.1 update comes with EMUI 3.1. The final stable build is scheduled to roll out to users throughout Europe within the next few weeks.
The Huawei Honor 6 was announced by the company exactly a year ago in June 2014, and came out of the box with Android 4.4.2 KitKat, with Emotion UI 3.0 on top. The smartphone features a 5-inch full HD display, and is powered by a HiSilicon Kirin 920 SoC, designed in-house by Huawei. The chipset features an integrated octa-core CPU clocked at a maximum of 1.7 GHz. The chip also comes with a Mali-T628 MP4 GPU. The smartphone comes with 3 GB of RAM and 16 or 32 GB of internal storage. On the imaging front, the Honor 6 has a 13 megapixel primary camera with autofocus and dual-LED flash, whereas the secondary camera comes with a 5 megapixel sensor to take care of the selfies. All said and done, the Honor 6 is a pretty decent phone and Android Lollipop will hopefully make the experience even sweeter for its owners.
