If you are someone who often roots their device or is heavily into smartphone customization then you will know the importance of having a good recovery system in place on your device. Not only do recoveries help to make the process of updating your device (or changing it) much smoother but they are also essential means of protecting your device and recovering from not so good events, hence the name, recovery.
To be fair, recoveries are equally as important to non-root devices and those on stock android. The only problem is that stock android does not come with a great recovery option. This is why other manufacturers have started working on their own recovery options and what has also fuelled the success of more well known third party options like ClockworkMod and TWRP (TeamWin Recovery Project). Well, the introduction of the latest android version, otherwise known as Android M, seems to be trying to rectify the lack of a sufficient recovery option by introducing a couple of new features on the stock version.
The first notable feature is the ability to apply an update from the SD card. Now, this will be a very familiar feature to those in the customization world. This one, essentially allows the user to push the update from the device, locally. Therefore, downloaded updates and the likes will be able to be manually pushed without having to connect your device to the computer. The second notable feature is the ability to mount the system partition. It is less obvious as to what the benefits of this feature will be to the end-user and seems more likely to be one which is more beneficial to developers than anyone. However, it is now there on the Android M preview. Of course, as this is a developers preview, it is worth pointing out that these features in general, might be geared towards developers. As such, there is no real confirmation that either, both or more recovery features will be present in the final version of Android M when it is released. If they are though, they will likely be features which are warmly welcome by those who need them.
