Corning has over 160 years of experience in material science, most of their innovations have been used in the creation of display technology. It was in 2011 when Corning launched its first generation of Lotus Glass, a glass substrate used directly in the liquid crystal displays enabling manufacturers to design tighter housings for smartphones resulting in slimmer devices. Two years later, the company launched their second generation called Lotus XT Glass. Now, as part of a display at the Society for Information Display’s Display Week, Corning has just announced their third generation known as Lotus NXT Glass. By using a new measure called Total Pitch Variation (TPV), they have created a product with minimal TPV that provides more stability under more temperature conditions. The company claims that this new metric can provide up to 60 percent better results than any other product.
This technology is targeted towards LCD or OLED display technologies that use either a low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) or an oxide thin-film transistor (TFT) process to integrate the high performance display components such as transistors or color filters and now manufacturers can work with them at a wider range of temperatures. Panel makers can create displays with up to 100 pixels per inch more than current display technologies while reducing battery consumption for up to 15 percent and their assembly yields will be improved by up to 1.5 percent, which will help them reduce the cost. Consumers clearly will get benefitted by all this by getting higher resolution displays that are brighter and consume less energy at the same time.
Corning might be better known for their Gorilla Glass panels that cover most of the available smartphones and they have been making their glass more resistant and thinner in every new generation, so these two products can coexist in a single device, one providing a better display and the other covering it so it looks good even after small accidents, they are confident that they products can even compete with sapphire. The Lotus NXT Glass is available now, so manufacturers will soon get the advantages of this product and we will probably see the results in a near future.
