Cloud storage services are a dime a dozen these days, but Dropbox is arguably one of the most popular and in turn, one of the most well-known. There are many reasons for this, but the main reason is that it just works. The latest version of the Android app recently got an update today, bringing the app forward to version 3.0 with a polished material design style UI for everyone to check out. To be clear, these visual changes have been available since before today’s update in the beta versions, but now things are rolling out to everyone via the regular version of the application. You may or may not have seen the update alert pop up in your status bar, and if not you can download the apk from here.
As for what’s new, the changes seem to be rather subtle as the app looks the same visually as it did a couple of weeks ago when the material design refresh was pushed out initially. The only difference now is that those who aren’t beta users will have material design for the first time. If you haven’t yet received that update, then the material design style in the UI will be a brand new feature for you, which comes along with a hamburger menu, floating action button, and the overflow menu. As pointed out by Android Police, the pull to refresh action within the main menu is still not present within the app, and there is no telling when Dropbox might decide to add that function in.
Although the update is beginning to roll out to everyone as of now, it could still take a day or two before it comes through to your device. For those who are on older versions of Dropbox without the material design refresh, all those tabs will be tucked away within the hamburger menu so they haven’t disappeared, they have just been moved to a new location within the app as this keeps to the material design guidelines. There doesn’t seem to be anything extremely noticeable in terms of big changes here, so don’t expect too much of a difference from the update directly before this one.
