Samsung has developed a sort of history for releasing improved versions of their Galaxy S flagship devices, going back to the Galaxy S4. Originally, the Galaxy S4 launched with a Snapdragon 600 CPU, but they then released a Snapdragon 800 variant with faster LTE capabilities. They did the same with the Galaxy S5, this time releasing a Galaxy S5 Plus with a 2560 x 1440 Super AMOLED display instead of the 1080p display in the original model. Both of these models were designed for the South Korean market, which struggles to keep devices sales steady throughout the year due to massive subsidies and enticing deals that cause customers to hop between networks. For the last few weeks, we have seen leaks and rumors of a Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, an improved version of Samsung’s 2015 flagship.
The notorious @OnLeaks Twitter handle, recently tweeted what he claims is more information about the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. As Tweets are, the information is short and sweet simply saying “Galaxy S6 Edge Plus (approx. 154.45 x 75.80 x 6.85mm (suggesting 5.5″ screen))”. Now, Samsung lists the official measurements of the Galaxy S6 Edge as “143.4 x 70.5 x 6.8mm” so this leak does suggest something of an increase in size when it comes to overall dimensions. The image used be @OnLeaks however, is not a new image. In fact, it is an image from Samsung’s own press site, they are basically the same identical image, both have been placed below to take a look at. This, coupled with the fact that these numbers could have bene plucked out of thin air suggests that a spoon full of salt, rather than a pinch is required here.
The idea of Samsung releasing an improved version of the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge doesn’t sound crazy on its own, though. As discussed, Samsung does in fact have a history of doing this, but to release a 5.5-inch version would start to eat into the Galaxy Note line’s sales, and as Samsung will have a new iPhone, and possibly a new iPhone Plus to deal with this Fall, we can’t see Samsung wanting to take any of the limelight away from the Galaxy Note line. Either way, it looks like we have a lot more to see from Samsung in 2015.
