Today, Google announced a new initiative called ‘News Lab’. With News lab, the company is hoping to get its data and tools into the hands of journalists around the world. News Lab will have short written and video tutorials along with case studies to show off some of the best practices from newsrooms around the world. The company will also be updating these resources regularly, as they continue to develop new products that are relevant to News Lab.
“From Maps to YouTube to Fusion Tables to Earth to Search, we offer many tools that newsrooms can use in their reporting and storytelling. Now, journalists around the world can access tutorials on these products created specifically for newsrooms, at g.co/newslab. We’ll post short written and video tutorials and case studies that highlight best practices from top newsrooms around the world. As Google develops new products that help journalists, we’ll update these resources regularly. You can also get updates by following us on Twitter andGoogle+, and by subscribing to our YouTube channel.”
Google has quite a few tools already out there, before News Lab, that helps journalists and media outlets report on news more affectively. YouTube is a great tool for getting video out there, as you can reach a whole lot more readers and viewers by posting video content on YouTube and embedding it on a site then just uploading to your media outlet’s site.
It also appears that Google is giving some bigger news sites a boost in SEO today, at least according to 9to5Google. It will be interesting to see how News Lab helps out media outlets and journalists. With all the technology that we have available right now, it should definitely help in getting news out there sooner, and improve how the news reachers viewers, and readers alike.
