Google’s certainly got an eye for talent and it seems to hire many of the best and brightest for each particular field within the company. Not all of their talented employees and executives stay on forever though, which is evident by the handful of high-level executives which have departed the company over the last year or two. The latest Google executive to leave the company is Neal Mohan who specialized in advertising. Re/Code reports that he’s leaving Google to take on a position over at Dropbox, one of the many competitors for Google in the cloud storage space.
Mohan’s new role will be Head of Product, which was a position previously held by Ilya Fushman. In the past Mohan held positions for DoubleClick which was eventually purchased by Google, prompting his change to the search company where he has been working for nearly the past seven and a half years. He also had a brief internship at Microsoft before moving back to DoubleClick prior to the Google acquisition. During his time at Google, Mohan oversaw Google Display and mobile advertising, which included responsibilities for AdSense, the Google Display Network, AdMob, Ad Exchange, Wildfire, Admeld and others. With his clear and precise expertise for Advertising related work, it comes as a little bit of a surprise that Mohan will be placed into a role at Dropbox, a company which has literally zero to do with ads.
Mohan is just the latest person towards the top to leave Google for another company, and he likely won’t be the last. What is prompting this change from Google over to one of the leading cloud storage companies is unknown, and as of yet neither Mohan, Dropbox, or Google have confirmed the transfer from company to company. These sorts of details have a way of going officially public sooner or later, so it likely won’t be long before someone at Google addresses the departure over social media as they’ve done in the past for others.
