We’ve done quite a few articles about monetizing your app, as well as marketing it correctly. Part of that, that we haven’t covered is bringing your apps to more countries. Over 190 countries download apps from the Google Play Store. That’s a pretty big number, and that means there’s a lot of people out there that can download or buy your app.
Today, Google released a new infographic on their AdMob website, which breaks down a lot of interesting stats. For instance, North American app developers can earn up to 50% of AdMob revenue from outside of North America, 60% for Asia-Pacific, and 85% for Europe, Middle East and Africa regions.
Another interesting metric in this infographic is the adoption for smartphones and tablets. In the US, about 51% use smartphones, to about 46% tablets. While in China it’s 37% to 20%. What’s the most telling about China though is that 92% of users engage with in-app ads. The infographic also shows us what app functions are popular in each country. With the US being most popular for email, and weather. Followed by the camera and messaging. In China, however, it’s mostly weather and the camera. With email coming in second to last in front of gaming.
Localization matters. Not everyone speaks the same language, and if you’ve ever traveled internationally, you’ll know exactly what I mean. There are all kinds of services available out there that can help translate your app into other languages like Spanish, French, German and others. According to Google, developers are losing about 8-13% of users due to poor localization. That may not sound like a lot, but that’s roughly 1 in 10 users using your app. For developers, you should be prioritizing high-quality translations, also understand how consumers’ app usage differs by the market, and finally learn how lost users’ experiences could have been improved.
Google’s infographic also shows that China and Brazil users are more likely to experience poor localization in apps compared to those in the US and Japan. That also goes for customer support.
