HTC is a very well-known smartphone manufacturer, pretty much everyone has heard of this Taiwan-based company. HTC has been making some compelling devices for years now, but they just haven’t managed to compete with the biggest OEMs in the world, and are constantly struggling to turn a profit. HTC has released a number of high-end devices this year, but thus far, that hasn’t helped much. Truth be told, it might take some time until we see if any of the released devices will do good for HTC, but until then, we’re here to talk about something else.
As you all know by now, there have been a lot of rumors regarding the possibility of a third-party company purchasing HTC. Many companies have been mentioned in the process, including the Taiwanese tech giant, Asus. Well, this time around, we actually have some official news to share with you, directly from Asus’ chairman, Johnny Shih. During Asus’ annual meeting held today, Asus’ chairman has said that the company still hasn’t ruled out the possibility of purchasing HTC. Asus’ CFO, David Chang, said that Johnny Shih discussed the topic of HTC purchase internally, but that the deal probably won’t happen.
HTC’s shares have dropped almost 50% since HTC launched their One M9 handset back in March during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. HTC has also unveiled the One M9+, One E9+, Butterfly 3 handset, which are all high-end devices. That being said, the company also plans to introduce a ‘Hero’ device in October in order to try to get consumers’ attention We still don’t have that much info when it comes to this handset, but it sounds like it might be an interesting one. HTC is currently worth around $2 billion, which is nothing compared to their worth in 2011 when the company was worth $33.9 billion.
It seems like HTC has quite a few suitors, and as their market value drops, those companies will quite probably be even more interested. Either way, we’ll let you know if any new developments arise here, but it seems like Asus is thinking about purchasing HTC, which would certainly be an interesting move for this Taiwan-based tech giant.
