It was back on April 17 that we first announced that the new HTC One M9 was now available to purchase in Canada…and Koodo, under the TELUS ‘umbrella,’ was one of those carriers. Now it seems that the HTC One M9 has mysteriously disappeared from Koodo’s website as a possible smartphone to purchase – it is nowhere to be found, and if you search their website for HTC One M9, all you receive is a troubleshooting site for the M9 and several other devices. We do know there were many critics upset with how little change there was from the HTC One M8 to the One M9, but did those feelings of boredom translate into such poor lack of sales that Koodo just dropped the device?
That is exactly what happened according to the ‘Mobile Master’ on Koodo’s website. A reader asked the question, “What happened to the HTC M9?” and the Mobile Master answered him: “Unfortunately due to lackluster sales, the device was discontinued. Some stores may still have it in stock, though. You should call around to stores/retailers in your area to see if they still have it.” Another of Koodo’s Mobile Master gave his opinion on the situation as well and said, “I honestly think if Koodo offered more in the way of colour choices, the One M9 would have fared better in terms of sales. Reports of their Snapdragon processor overheating quickly gained media attention and a camera, while somewhat of an upgrade from the One M8, had issues that required a firmware update from the manufacturer. From a design perspective, some chose to hang on to their One M8’s, citing that there was no real difference to the One M9. All that said, the One M9 is my daily driver and hasn’t let me down yet. Definitely a capable device if you can get your hands on one.”
On the One M9, HTC shuffled the cameras around, put a small lip around the outside edge for a better grip, and added the 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor that was plagued with overheating issues – rumor or not – so that may have scared off a few buyers. However, if you are in the market for one, call around to the different stores and they might still have one in-stock to see you, but as far as ordering up one on their website, forget it…it is just not there.
