Today, Nest announced their Nest Cam. Which is basically their Dropcam, which Google bought recently – I understand most people forgot that happened, including myself. It’s up for pre-order now and will cost you $199 each. Additionally, Nest also refreshed their smoke alarm known as Nest Protect, and their Nest Learning Thermostat which was their original product.
“At Nest, we always wanted to build more than a thermostat,” said Tony Fadell, Nest chief executive officer.
And today, Nest has more than just a thermostat. Incorporating Dropcam into their lineup. They have a pretty good looking product lineup right now, not just with what the products can do, but also how they look, which has always been important to Fadell who designed the original iPod. While the Protect and Thermostat both have had issues, they should be fixed in this next generation of products, at least we hope so.
To coincide with this announcement, Nest has also released an update to their app, which should be available once pre-orders start shipping, it’s not on the Play Store right now nor the Apple App Store. The app is now version 5.0 and brings together all three of Nest’s products, and allows you to control them all from the app. So you will be able to control the thermostat no matter where you are, as well as turn off the smoke detector if it goes off by mistake. Without need to fan the detector to turn off. Pretty neat stuff. Although Nest Cam is probably the coolest out of the three. Nest is working together with a few YouTubers so that they can allow live streaming to YouTube from Nest. Which is a pretty cool idea. You can read more about that by hitting the source link below and checking out their press release.
Nest has some pretty interesting ideas, and it’s exciting to see their product line expand a bit more. We’ll be excited to see what else the company has in the next few years as the Internet of Things gets more and more popular. Especially when Google’s platform – codenamed Brillo – actually launches. It was talked about at Google I/O last month in San Francisco.
