The age of the connected home is upon us and with each passing day we get closer and closer to “having a smarter home” being a more mainstream thing. There are already a range of different products which can help you do this, from various manufacturers no less, but perhaps one of the most popular is Nest who already offers a thermostat and a smoke protector. Nest held their press conference this morning revealing the all new Nest Protect and the new Nest Cam, which are a newer model of the smoke detector they already offered as well as a new wireless security camera.
Nest may soon be offering (or at least preparing for it) other new smart home products down the line as suggested by the new video they posted alongside videos for the two new products they talked about this morning. The theme of the video is “The Thoughtful Home” and may be pointing to a range of new connected home products from Nest in the future. In the video they discuss that plenty of things in our homes are hardly ever thought about, but that it’s probably about time we think of them more often. They then pose the question of “what if these things were smarter and thought about us?” Throughout the video Nest focuses on a number of different things within the home without actually stating they have these new products coming, so it leaves things open-ended enough for the mind to wonder what they have planned.
Among the things subtly highlighted in the video are faucets, fans, light switches, surge protectors and power strips, night lights, sprinkler systems, security for the front door, kitchen appliances and other kitchen related items, alarm clocks, and a garage door. Even the Big Ass Fans makes an appearance, which is a smart ceiling fan that already works with Nest’s learning thermostat to help regulate temperature. All of these things can have some effect on either the electricity or the water usage in our homes, or both, and tieing them all together through a smart connected network seems like a grand idea. With Nest being under Google and Google announcing their Internet of Things platform ‘Brillo’ at the developer conference last month, it stands to reason there is a possibility that if Nest launches a range of new smart home products, Brillo could be the backbone which connects them all to each other. These of course just speculations, but they’re also speculations which make sense given Nest’s commitment to energy cost savings and efficiency for consumers. Check out the video below to see everything which gets pointed out.
