It wasn’t quite 24 hours ago that we saw a rumor that could lead to a significant change in the land of both video games and the mobile industry, and now it seems that hope may be dead after all. Nintendo, the Japanese gaming giant that’s been around for decades and has changed the face of gaming, has been going through a bit of a rough streak lately with sales of its home gaming console the Wii U. This of course always spurs on talk of a quick successor to fix the mistakes of the current product and ensure investors that the company isn’t resting on its laurels.
Yesterday’s rumor was quite a bombshell though, one that put Google’s Android on the backend of Nintendo’s next official gaming project, the Nintendo NX. Now we’re seeing from the Wall Street Journal that Nintendo executives are vehemently denying the report, saying that Android’s existence on Nintendo’s next system is nothing but rumors and a pipe dream. The move made sense given the rumor that Nintendo is working on a hybrid gaming machine of sort that will bridge the gap between it’s consistently successful handheld gaming machines and the inconsistent home console market for them.
Couple that with the fact that Nintendo has teamed up with DeNA to develop games officially for mobile platforms like iOS and Android and it made plenty of sense why we could have seen Android powering the next Nintendo experience. While this isn’t the nail in the coffin for those hoping that Android could be the brains behind the system that powers Nintendo’s next creative titles, seeing executives from a company squash a rumor this quickly doesn’t exactly bode well for any rumor. The annual Entertainment Electronics Expo in Las Angeles is just a few weeks away so it won’t be long before we see exactly what Nintendo is going to unveil about NX, and possibly what will power it too.
