Sony announced a new virtual reality headset, called Project Morpheus; this new gadget’s main goal is to revolutionize the way everyone interacts with their PlayStation entertainment systems, including the PS4 and PS Vita, and games in general. Project Morpheus was announced last year during the 2014 Game Developers Conference, in which the VR headset was considered to be in still in the prototyping stage. Today, a few hours prior to Sony’s E3 presentation, new information has surfaced from the tech news site, Wired. The leaked information was made public earlier than expected, which will make Sony’s presentation a bit predictable, as Project Morpheus was expected to be one of the highlights and most anticipated parts of the company’s conference. One detail that might capture your attention from Sony’s virtual reality headset, is the fact that it will cost “several hundred dollars” which is a little steep when compared to the other VR headsets already announced or out in the market.
The newly released information, revealed numerous key elements of the Project Morpheus, including a scheduled release date range for the first half of 2016. With 20 “games and experiences” already planned for the Morpheus VR headset, it will be one of the most complete products of this kind to be released. One of the most ambitious games to be released along Project Morpheus, is a first-person shooter; this genre of games is known to be somewhat difficult to port into VR platform. The studio behind this new FPS game is called Impulse Gear, and will take advantage of the already existing technologies, such as the popular PlayStation Move. Although this game hasn’t been confirmed as official, it’s main goal has been made public, and that is to improve the general playability of FPS games in VR headsets.
Project Morpheus is a highly anticipated virtual reality headset, but is it worth the increase in price? When comparing it to other VR headsets like Google’s Cardboard which ranges around a price of $25, or the popular $350 Oculus Rift Development Kit 2; the new Project Morpheus has few real differentiators to justify the “several hundred dollars” Sony expects their consumers to spend.
