Samsung Announces New Thin 4TB Portable Hard Drives

With the improvements that can be seen with cameras in smartphones, photos taken with them are occupying and demanding more memory space. This is largely due to higher resolutions, for instance, a user can now even record videos in 4K resolution and files such as them can get pretty big. 4 TB of disk space might sound like a lot, but if you download movies in high-quality or some uncompressed images, it may be just what you need. Portability has also become very important, as you can carry all these files with you and it makes it easy to share multimedia content when you plug it into a monitor or just share documents when downloading them to another computer. Either way, Samsung has now launched two portable hard drives with a 4 TB of capacity. They are called M3 and P3 and these are actually the first single drive ones to come in 2.5″ cases, so the company wants them to lead future capacity needs.

Before, having this much capacity meant bulky devices due to the inclusion of multiple drives. However, with these new solutions that can be powered by a USB connection, the hardware is just 1/10 of an inch thicker than the 2 TB portable hard drive that the company offers, making it only 0.78 inches (19.85 mm) thick and weighing 8.3 ounces (236 grams). This means that they are the thinnest and lightest yet. Making them an ideal candidate along with any laptop that needs more space than what is included within. They have support for USB 3.0 connections for faster transfers and they don’t require external power supplies. The hard drives feature the new Spinpoint M10P which includes five 800 GB platters with the highest areal density, achieving their compact size.

Both hard drives share the same measurements, they are both compatible with Windows Vista, 7 and 8 as well as Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later and they both include software for data encryption and backup. So the only difference between the M3 and the P3 seems to be design-wise. The M3 uses a more rugged design with a patterned surface while the P3 is more stylized with a shiny gray coating. They will be available later this month, but there’s no information on the prices.
