Samsung Galaxy S6 Survives A Trip To Space And Back

Many customers that purchase smartphones like to add a case or ‘wrap’ to help personalize their new device.  One of the premier ‘wrappers’ is a company called SlickWraps, and they make a huge variety of wraps for a variety of devices – Moto X, HTC One M9, PlayStation 4, the Moto 360 smartwatch and many more.  Their wraps are made from carbon fiber, metal, genuine leather, wood and many other materials that allow the user to not only customize their device, but also add some protection as well from bumps and drops.

Some of their newest wraps are for the new Samsung Galaxy S6 and to promote this option, SlickWraps decided to send a Galaxy S6 clad in a bamboo wood wrap up into space and back attached to a weather balloon, just to see how it would hold up.  We are happy to report that the Galaxy S6 appeared to sustain no damage from its long trip and upon its rather sudden descent back to earth.  After locating the Galaxy S6 in the shrubs, they turn it on and it appears to work just fine.

At first, one might think that it was just a weather balloon and it didn’t really go into space, but that would be too dismissive of an attitude.  The SlickWraps video shows them setting up their weather balloon and cameras and then attaching the Galaxy S6 to the balloon on a kind of heavy duty ‘selfie stick.’  The weather balloon is then sent on a ‘three hour tour’ up into the heavens to the height of 122,264 feet (37,266m) – three times the altitude that a jetliner flies and certainly high enough to see the curvature of the earth and the blackness of space.

The balloon, along with its Galaxy S6 in a bamboo wrap travel 111 miles (233km) at speeds reaching 110 mph (177km/h).  Along the way the temperatures dropped to -65F (-54C), which is well below any temperature you would encounter in everyday life…yet the Galaxy S6 in its SlickWraps bamboo wrap survived all of that, including its plummet to earth with no parachute.  Remember that most smartphones benefit from some sort of protection and the new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are made of glass…so a little SlickWraps can never hurt! SlickWraps is constantly promoting their products with discounts, so keep an eye out for the next one.
