Sony CEO Gets Re-Elected By The Company's Shareholders

Sony is one of the biggest tech companies in the world. This Japan-based company is manufacturing all sorts of tech equipment, from TVs and stereos all the way to gaming consoles, smartphones and smartwatches. Sony Mobile hasn’t been doing all that well in the mobile department though, the company has been having issues turning profit from their smartphone business for quite some time now. They’re hoping that their recently released Xperia Z4 / Z3+ handset will help with that that. Anyhow, Sony held their annual meeting earlier this week and it seems like they’ll hold on to their current CEO. Let’s see what’s what, shall we.

Kazuo Hirai is Sony’s current CEO, he has been occupying that position for quite some time now. Well, Sony’s shareholders backed up Mr. Hirai once again, and he’s going to continue leading the company. Sony held their annual meeting quite recently, and shareholders still believe in Kazuo Hirai despite a low return of equity. He was re-elected with 88% of votes from shareholders, which actually means he still enjoys great support at Sony. As a comparison, Mr. Hirai won the election with 89% of votes last year, so he basically didn’t lose any faith from shareholders in the past year or so.

That being said, Sony had to cut costs in the mobile department quite a few times in the last year or two. The company is struggling to sell enough devices, and they even left the biggest smartphone market last year, the Chinese market. Sony, however, is doing really well in camera sensors and videogames department, the sales are stronger than ever. This was to be expected considering the Sony PlayStation 4 sales have been strong ever since it launched, and a ton of manufacturers all over the world are using Sony’s camera sensors in their smartphone and tablet offerings.

It will certainly be interesting to see what will become of Sony Mobile in the coming years. The Xperia Z4 / Z3+ wasn’t exactly that well received by consumers, and Sony failed to hype up the device prior to its launch. There’s still plenty of time for Sony to rise to the occasion and release something captivating. If the company decides to stick with their release schedule, we’ll see a new Sony-branded flagship before the end of this year, so stay tuned for that.
