Looks like the much-awaited Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update is finally starting to roll out to the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, both of which were launched with Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. According to a report on SamMobile, T-Mobile is rolling out the update in the US. There’s no word at the moment about the international rollout, or for that matter, even when other carriers in the US will be rolling out the update, but seeing as it has already gone live on one carrier, it cannot possibly be very long for the update to roll out universally.
A couple of weeks ago, there were reports of some beta testers running pre-release builds of the Android 5.1.1 official ROM on their Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edges, but now the final stable build is beginning to roll out Over-The-Air (OTA). Owners can update their devices through Samsung Kies, or in case you just can’t wait for the update to arrive to you OTA, you can download the update from SamMobile’s firmware database. The update for the Galaxy S6 (SM-G920T) is G920TUVU2COF6 and the update for the Galaxy S6 Edge (SM-G925T) is numbered G925TUVU2COF6.
While Android 5.1.1 primarily is a bug-fix version of Lollipop, it also brings a number of interesting new features that were not present in the 5.0 version of the operating system. One such new feature simplifies the manual exposure control system in the camera, which will now allow users to change the exposure in a specific part of an image. There are also a number of changes in the TouchWiz user interface included by Samsung, whereby certain redundant options can be removed from the notification shade, if the user so desires. There’s also talk of the overall performance getting a boost as a result of this update.
The Galaxy S6 twins were released in April by Samsung and were almost universally praised as the best smartphones to have come out of Samsung’s stables. Having had a relatively lukewarm 2014, where the South Korea-based company lost its number one mantle in two key emerging markets of China and India, the company knew it needed something big, and if latest sales reports are anything to go by, looks like the Galaxy S6 twins have given Samsung the much needed boost.
