Sony introduced its newest flagship tablet, the Xperia Z4 Tablet during this year’s MWC. It’s one of the thinnest tablets around at 6.1 mm thick and it’s also one of the better specced, including the powerful but controversial Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor along with 3 GB of RAM. At 389 grams, it’s also one of the lightest and its 2K resolution display remains to be one of the sharpest and brightest and the optional keyboard accessory makes it easier to write long documents. The hardware is also waterproof and dustproof thanks to its IP68 certification. Despite knowing about this tablet for around three months, the tablet got a little delayed and is now becoming available in some regions.
A Russian user has managed to get this tablet and he is willing to destroy it in order to test its build quality in a series of videos. The first video shows the tablet being dropped from around waist height on a hardwood floor with the tempered scratch-resistant glass facing down and the tablet remains fully functional after and the glass doesn’t break or shatters. During a second drop test, the tablet is dropped on one of its sides from about the same height and while it’s hard to tell due to some focusing issues from the camera, the results are equally good, the glass is intact and the metallic frame with the resistant corners hold up really well.
Then we come to the scratch-test, tapping the glass with a sharp screw and then sliding it throughout the surface then repeating the procedure with a key weren’t enough to create marks in the glass. The scratch-test for the polycarbonate back includes scratching it with a coin and a key, unfortunately, both of these items manage to mark this component. Finally, a two-part video shows the tablet being shot from the back and the second video show the consequences, the back is perforated from the bullet and the glass in the front got shattered where the bullet hit it and some of the back components are even exposed. Since no one is expected to treat this tablet such a way, we can conclude that Sony has created a very durable tablet.
