Today, ZTE is announcing a couple of new prepaid smartphones. Currently, ZTE is #4 in North America in terms of OEMs, following Apple, Samsung and LG. Being the third largest in the US. They are #3 in prepaid, actually. Today, they are bringing a new handset to AT&T as well as Cricket. The ZTE Maven is coming to AT&T, and will be available on their website as well as their retail stores. It’ll be $59.99 without a contract. For that $59.99 you get a “Compact in size, with voice-directed navigation and pre-installed Uber app, the Maven is the perfect phone for anyone or any family on-the-go this summer. With 4G LTE, a powerful 1.2 GHz Qualcomm quad-core processor, you get fast speeds streaming, downloading, and surfing.”
Specs of the ZTE Maven include a 4.5-inch FWVGA LCD Display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, as well as Android 5.1 Lollipop, and a microSD card slot supporting up to 32GB of additional storage. Too bad you can’t get that fancy new SanDisk 200GB microSD card to use here.
ZTE is also announcing the Sonata 2 for Cricket Wireless, obviously this one is also available off-contract. Considering Cricket doesn’t do contracts. The device will be available for $29.99 with activation or an eligible upgrade. The original Sonata has been a success for Cricket and ZTE, so the Sonata 2 is aimed to continue that success. It has a 5MP camera on the back with LED Flash and 4X zoom. There is also a 2MP front-facing camera for taking selfies. Much like the Maven, the Sonata 2 also has a microSD card slot that supports up to 32GB of additional storage, and is powered by a Qualcomm dual-core processor. Don’t worry, it does still support 4G LTE on AT&T’s network.
Both smartphones are available today from AT&T and Cricket Wireless respectively. While these aren’t the highest of end smartphones, they are some pretty decent offerings for prepaid users. Considering these are being offered at $60 and $30 respectively, without a contract, we can’t really expect them to contend with the Galaxy S6 or LG G4.
