Xiaomi has become a big name in the Android smartphone space, and have quickly risen to become one of the most important brands worldwide, despite the fact that their smartphones aren’t on sale officially outside of China, India and a few other markets. Their Mi line of devices has expanded to offer devices like the RedMi, RedMi Note and most recently the Mi4i and Mi Note Pro. Despite offering devices that cater to a number of size preferences and price points, their flagship Mi line remains the most popular worldwide. With the Mi4 and Mi4i having become well established, fans are expecting the new Mi5 to launch later this year, and the first leaks of what could be under-the-hood are starting to appear.
According to a recent leak out of China, the Mi5 is to launch with a 5.2-inch Quad HD display, with a Snapdragon 810 and 3GB of RAM running the show, with a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera and 13-megapixel front-facing camera. A 3,000 mAh battery is said to be included with fast-charging that can go from 0 to 30% in 40 minutes or so. Interestingly enough, a larger, more powerful version of the Mi5, the Mi5 Plus is also rumored for a release later this year. Eschewing the Snapdragon 810 from the Mi5, this version will feature a Snapdragon 820 as well as a 5.7-inch Quad HD display and a 3,500 mAh battery which can go from 0 to 100% in just under an hour. For some though, the 23-megapixel rear-facing camera will be the biggest upgrade, as we’re sure Xiaomi will have some special features and software lined up for this one as well, and optical image stabilisation as well as laser autofocus are listed in the leak already.
Metal builds for both the Mi5 and Mi5 Plus are teased here as well. Whether or not these devices do launch later this year with these specs is something we’ll have to wait and see about, but it would make for a great end of the year for Xiaomi. With the success of the Mi Note and Mi Note Pro as well as the Mi4i in India, devices with these specs would be great to end the year.
