Sony has already rolled out Android 5.0 to the majority of their devices, even going back to the original Xperia Z family of devices. Now the company is working on rolling out the Android 5.1 update to their devices. And have released a schedule of what devices will get the update when. It’s important to remember that these are not the carrier models, like the T-Mobile Xperia Z3, or the Verizon Xperia Z3v. Those will depend on the carrier, as to when they’ll be available.
According to Sony Mobile’s blog, it appears that the Xperia Z2 and Z3 series will be getting their update this week. Next up is the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z Ultra in the coming weeks. Shortly after that we have the Xperia C3, and Xperia T2 Ultra. Next is the Xperia Z series, and last but not least is the Xperia M2 and Xperia M2 Aqua.
Now, it’s worth noting, that these can change and likely will change. Based on bugs found and issues from rolling out these OTAs to all of their devices. But we should see Android 5.1 hitting the majority of Sony’s recent Xperia devices in the next few weeks. You can check out Sony Mobile’s blog post for more information, and that will be linked in the source section down below.
In the past, Sony hasn’t really done much in terms of updating their devices. Which makes it really nice to see that they are updating their devices that were announced as far back as 2013. Seeing as that’s a little over 2 years now (specifically for the Xperia Z), that’s pretty spectacular for Sony. The Android 5.1 Lollipop update isn’t a huge one, but it should fix some bugs that users were likely having with the Lollipop update. It also brings in native support for Dual-SIM, which a number of Sony devices don’t have, but a few of their mid-range and lower-end models do support. So that’s a plus. There are also some changes to Smart Lock, which are pretty sweet. Once the updates are available for these devices, we’ll be sure to let everyone know.
