Facebook is probably the social network that everyone loves to hate. Whether it’s because of security and privacy, or you just don’t like the network. Facebook is huge, and the news feed is a huge part of that. Today, the company announced an update that allows you to have better control over your news feed, of what you will see and won’t see when you log in to Facebook.
With this update, you can prioritize who you see first. Of course, you’ll want to make sure you pick the Android Headlines page to be prioritized. Those that you have prioritized at the top will then be the very first stories you see at the top of your timeline. However, it will only show new status updates or posts since the last time you opened the app. So you won’t see every little thing from last week or last month. The updated controls will also help you to find more pages to follow, that are similar to what you already follow. That right there is all about engagement for Facebook. As a company that sells ads, they want you to spend more time on the site, obviously.
You can also choose which friends to follow or unfollow in the news feed. Now unfollowing them is not unfriending them (I can see this getting very confusing very fast), but just allowing the news feed to skip their stories. This can be useful if one of your friends is constantly updating their Facebook every five minutes. You don’t want a news feed of just one person, that’s not a great experience. So now how do you get to these updated news feed preferences?
“To get to News Feed Preferences, tap More in the bottom right hand corner of your mobile app. News Feed Preferences are located under Settings. You can come back at any time to update your choices.”
According to Facebook’s post, the updated news feed is rolling out to iOS today and will be coming to Android in the coming weeks. Over 70% market share and Android still plays second fiddle to iOS with app updates and new apps.
