Each month, figures come in from various data research companies and provide the smartphone industry with an overview of how things are going. A couple of weeks ago saw the latest comScore report emerge which detailed how the android operating system was doing. Following on, IDC have now released their latest figures detailing the mobile landscape for Q2 of 2015. The report looks at how the smartphone manufacturers are doing on a quarter basis (compared to the same quarter last year) in terms of the number of units shipped, as well as their current overall market share compared to that in 2014. In terms of the wider figures, IDC notes that Q2 of 2015 saw overall an 11.6-percent increase year-over-year. This equates to just over 337 million smartphones being shipped in the quarter and the second highest shipment quarter to date. As well as the big names driving the majority of sales, the IDC report notes the increase in affordable handsets also helped to boost the overall shipping figures.
The big headline point from the report though is that Samsung has seen a drop of roughly 3-percent of their market share compared to 2014. Their 2014 Q2 market share was listed as 24.8% and according to the new figures in 2015 it has currently dropped down to 21.7-percent. In terms of units shipped, Samsung are stated to have shipped 73.2 million units in Q2 of 2015, which is a drop from the 74.9 million units accredited for Q2 of 2014. As to be expected with a Samsung drop, Apple have seen an increase year-on-year with the total number of units shipped in Q2 reaching 47.5 million (up front the Q2 2014 figure of 35.2 million). Their market share rose from 2014’s 11.7-percent up to 14.1-percent in 2015.
In terms of the other big manufacturers, Huawei also saw an upward momentum for this year with their Q2 units shipped coming in at 29.9 million (up from 20.2 million in Q2 2014). This helped to represent an overall market share shift of 6.7-percent up to 8.9-percent. Likewise, Xiaomi shipped 17.9 million units in Q2 compared to 13.8 million in Q2 of last year. Lenovo also made the list and also saw an upturn with 16.2 million units shipped compared to 2014’s Q2 figure of 15.8 million. As such, Samsung was the only manufacturer noted seeing a decline for Q2 units shipped compared to the previous year.
