When LG announced the G4 nearly 3 months ago now, many were impressed with what LG had put together. Featuring a real leather back, and incredible camera, a much improved screen over its predecessor and a whole lot more, it seemed success was imminent for LG’s team. Reality has proven to be a bit of a problem for LG though, as it seems less people than ever are clamoring for those high-end devices. We’ve already seen that investors and other agencies have lowered their sales expectations for both the LG G4 and LG’s entire portfolio as a whole, and now we’re getting some more official numbers for the G4 in South Korea in particular.
Jumping right into the numbers South Korean media is reporting that LG has only sold 240,000 G4’s by the end of June. Without context it’s a little difficult to understand just how low that number is, so we’ll compare it with South Korea’s other big technology firm Samsung. In comparison Samsung, who launched the Galaxy S6 around the same time as the LG G4, has sold over 1.3 million units between both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, a number that’s staggeringly higher than LG’s sales. Remember too that this is only the sales in South Korea, so we’d be looking numbers on an even grander scale at that point. While this is only after 2 months or so of sales it’s going to be difficult for LG to meet its worldwide goal of 12 million G4’s sold at this rate, a rate that’s even slower than the sales of the LG G3 last year.
While all of this sounds pretty bad remember that we’re only 3 months in to the life of the G4, and these numbers have come from the end of month 2 as well. LG has plenty of time to make up for the lack of sales, especially with the upcoming holiday and sales season that’s sure to spur on some serious sales for LG’s flagship as well as their other lineup. If that doesn’t help LG though things may be very different for the company next year as it tries to make up for momentum that had begun to be lost back when the G3 debuted.
