It’s been rumored a few times already, but LG Electronics President Cho Jun-ho, again stated during their earnings call earlier this week, that the company is still looking to release a “super premium” smartphone in the second half of the year. Now this isn’t the first time we’ve heard this from LG’s executives. Shortly after the LG G4 launched, LG stated they would be launching another flagship later this year, and that it’d be even more high-end than the LG G4 is.
LG used to have a phablet line, in the Optimus G Pro, which they killed after the G Pro 2 was announced – and never actually made it to North America. The rumored specs of this new super premium smartphone point at a 5.8-inch QHD display, so it appears that we might be seeing another phablet from LG. It’s also expected to sport 4GB of RAM. As far as a processor goes, it’s been rumored to be sporting the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, but could also be sporting their own home-grown ODIN processor, that they’ve been rumored to be working on for a few years now.
During the earnings conference call, LG executives said that they are looking to release this “super premium” phone in the second half of this year, to help combat the low sales of the LG G4. Their current flagship hasn’t seen the kind of sales they had expected to see. Meanwhile, it was also said during the conference call, that LG is looking at offering other variants of their flagship the LG G4. Which we’ve seen them do with the LG G3 last year in the LG G3 Beat and LG G3 S. LG has been releasing quite a few mid-range and low-end devices lately, at least here in the US. And we could see them release a few more in the near future.
LG is also rumored to be making one of the new Nexus’ devices this fall. So there is plenty to look forward to, out of this South Korean manufacturer when it comes to the second half of the year. I’d expect to see this “super premium” smartphone either at IFA, or shortly after at their own event – which they like to do sometimes. It could be named the LG G4 Pro as well.
