Through a post on his Google Plus account, Motorola’s David Schuster has announced that the company is starting to roll out the Android 5.1 Lollipop update to the Motorola Moto G 2014 (2nd Generation) model in China. In his post, Mr. Schuster says, “Good news, we have started to fully deploy Android Lollipop 5.1 to Moto G (2nd Gen) in China today”. The 2014 iteration of Moto G was launched last year by the company with Android 4.4.4 KitKat on board, but the device had already been updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop earlier this year. This update will now install the latest publicly-released Android version on Motorola’s mid-range offering in China. The device meanwhile, is slated to be replaced fairly soon, with the heavily-rumored next generation Moto G being readied for launch by the Lenovo-owned company.
Coming to the specifications of the smartphone, the device was released back in 2014, and features a 5-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, which makes it scratch resistant. The screen has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, which results in a pixel density of 294 dpi. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC, which comes with a quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU clocked at a frequency of 1.2 GHz. The chipset also comes with an integrated Adreno 305 GPU. The smartphone comes with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage, which can be expanded by up to 32 GB with the use of a microSD card. The Moto G 2014 edition comes with an 8 megapixel primary camera on the back with autofocus and an LED flash. The camera can shoot 720p videos at 30 fps. The secondary front-facing camera on the device meanwhile has a 2 megapixel camera for snapping selfies.
Coming to the connectivity options, the device comes with GSM (2G) and HSPA (3G) connectivity, but lacks support for LTE, which was already a sore point for some observers with the first generation Moto G model, leading Motorola to launch an LTE edition of the device at a later date. So some industry insiders were certainly unimpressed when even the second generation device did not rectify that glaring anomaly. Apart from that, the device comes with its standard array of connectivity features including Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, A-GPS and GLONASS. The handset also supports microUSB 2.0 connectivity and ships with a non-removable 2,070 mAh Lithium ion battery.
