The Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge smartphones are being updated with firmware which will reportedly fix minor bugs and bring along improvements in the battery life department. The updates however, will not include any new features, according to reports. In the US, T-Mobile is said to be rolling out the aforementioned updates, while reports from France are also indicating that an update pertaining to the battery life of the devices is being rolled out in the country. As for the updates to the French versions of the smartphones, the build number for the Galaxy S6 update happens to be G920FXXU2BOG8, while the update for the Galaxy S6 Edge comes with the build number G925FXXU2BOGB.
Coming to the updates being rolled out in the US by T-Mobile, the latest firmware comes with the build number G920TUVU2COF8 for the Galaxy S6 which will be an increment to the previous update, which bore the baseband version number G920TUVU2COF6. As for the Galaxy S6 Edge, the latest update will have the build number G925TUVU2COF8, while the previous version of the firmware came with the baseband version number G925TUVU2COF6. The file size for the Galaxy S6 update comes with a file size between 102 MB to 631 MB depending on the installed firmware, while the Galaxy S6 Edge update comes as either a 102 MB or a 635 MB download, again depending on whether the latest version of the software is already installed on the device. Users can check for the software update by going to Settings > System > About Device > Software Update. Tapping on ‘OK’ will start the update process, but a Wi-Fi connection will be required if the latest version of the firmware is not already installed, because of the large file-size.
As a reminder, both devices were launched by Samsung in March this year with Android 5.0.2 Lollipop out of the box, and were subsequently updated to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop in late April. While this particular update does not bring any new features to either of the devices, it would be interesting to note how much of an improvement will actually be noticeable by users in the real world, in terms of the battery lives of the two devices, which is pretty much the primary objective of these updates anyways.
