The NVIDIA SHIELD is one of the latest Android TV devices to arrive on the market. However, in spite of its youthful arrival, the SHIELD seems to already be fairly well equipped when it comes to updates. It was only a couple of weeks ago when the latest update (version 1.2) arrived which added increased support for 4K and improvements in the use of external SD cards. Now, following that update, it seems today SHIELD devices are receiving their next incremental update.
The latest update to the SHIELD, brings the device up to version 1.3. In terms of what’s new, there is nothing too major here and the update simply lists the changes included as improvements to the Wi-Fi and the SHIELD Controller connectivity. The latter of these two will be a welcomed addition to most SHIELD owners, as anything that improves the functionality of the controllers on a gaming console will inevitably improve the overall end-user experience. In addition to the Wi-Fi and controller connectivity, the changelog (shown in image below) also details that the system has been optimized for newly released apps and games. Again, at the moment there is little detail on what these improvements will mean and whether they have anything to do with the recently released set of games for the SHIELD. However, the updating does highlight NVIDIA seem to be quick and frequent in pushing out updates to the device. Hopefully, this will be a feature which continues going forward as well.
In terms of the actual update, this is coming in as an over the air update and will likely have already shown up on your device. If you have not already checked or seen it arrive, then the update will be present on screen in the homescreen main shortcut feed when you next turn the device on. As such, you will not have to search for the update like you often have to on smartphones and tablets.
